Bukit Panjang LRT Full-Day Closures on Sept 20 & 27 for Final Renewal Works
Train service on the Bukit Panjang LRT (BPLRT) will be suspended for the entire day on Sunday, 20 September and Sunday, 27 September 2026, as the Land Transport Authority (LTA) carries out the final phase of its renewal programme on the 27-year-old line.
In a Facebook post on Aug 27, LTA said the full-day closures on the two Sundays will allow concentrated engineering works and reduce the need for additional piecemeal service adjustments later. The BPLRT renewal programme is on track to be completed by the end of 2026, making these the last planned full closures before the upgraded line settles into normal operations.
What the renewal works include
The BPLRT renewal programme is the most comprehensive overhaul since the line opened in 1999. Key upgrades being delivered include:
- A new power supply system, replacing ageing equipment on the line
- Improved signalling, bringing the LRT in line with the signalling standards used on Singapore's MRT lines
- A modernised Operations Control Centre for the line
Recent BPLRT disruptions were traced to faults in the new Power SCADA system, which monitors power distribution across the network. LTA has said these teething issues are part of the commissioning process for the new equipment, and the full-day closures will allow engineers to complete integration and stabilisation work.
Shuttle and bus alternatives on closure days
Affected commuters can use regular bus services 922, 972 and 976, as well as a dedicated shuttle bus service:
- Shuttle B will run from Choa Chu Kang to Bukit Panjang, via Petir, at intervals of 5 to 10 minutes
- Regular bus services 922, 972 and 976 continue to serve the Bukit Panjang corridor
- Commuters should budget an additional 15-20 minutes of travel time
What happens after September
Once the final renewal works are completed, commuters can expect fewer unplanned disruptions on the BPLRT. The modernised signalling and power systems are designed to bring the reliability of the Bukit Panjang LRT closer to that of the main MRT network, which has been posting record reliability figures in 2026.
